What should I do if the AI ignores part of my prompt?
Why parts get dropped
Models weigh recent and clearly separated text more heavily. An instruction buried in paragraph three of a long prompt is easier to miss than one in a numbered list at the end.
Conflicting instructions also cause silent drops. If you ask for 'a detailed report' and 'under 100 words,' the model picks one and ignores the other.
Some tasks, like strict formatting or counting words, are simply harder for language models. Expect to check and correct those rather than getting them right on the first try.
Fixes that work
Rewrite your prompt as a short task sentence plus a numbered checklist of requirements. Then add: 'Before answering, list each requirement and confirm you will follow it.'
If the model still skips something, repeat that one requirement in the final line of the prompt. Repetition at the end is one of the most reliable fixes.
For multi-part tasks, split them into separate messages. Asking for one section at a time usually beats one giant prompt with ten demands.
- Put must-follow rules in a numbered list.
- Repeat the most important rule as the last line.
- Remove instructions that contradict each other.
- Ask the model to check its answer against your list before finishing.
- Break long tasks into steps across several messages.
Common mistakes
- Burying key instructions in the middle of a long paragraph where they carry less weight.
- Giving contradictory rules, like 'be thorough' and 'keep it to two sentences.'
- Assuming a single prompt can reliably handle formatting, tone, facts, and length all at once.
